At the New York Comic Con, Marvel and Joss Whedon announced that Clark Gregg will somehow be reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson in the upcoming “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot for ABC. Now Whedon and company have revealed the first brand new addition to the cast.
Deadline is reporting that actress Ming-Na Wen has signed on to the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot to portray Agent Melinda May. The report notes that the character was previously called Althea Rice in the casting breakdown. Melinda May is described as “soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences… [She] is an ace pilot, a weapons expert and a soldier who can — and has — gone beyond the call of duty.” Melinda’s nickname on the series is “The Calvary.”
In addition to her long stint on “ER,” Ming-Na has worked extensively as a voice actress in Mulan, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, “Spawn,” “The Batman” and the “Kingdom Hearts” video game series. Ming-Na has also appeared in several TV series, including “The Single Guy,” “Inconceivable,” “Vanished,” “Two and a Half Men” and she also had a recurring role on “Stargate Universe.”
With the casting of Ming-Na, the remaining major S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to be cast are a young woman named Skye in addition to Agents Grant Ward, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons.
The “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot is being co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen; with Joss Whedon also potentially on board to direct the pilot.
