With all this Iron Man 3 news out there, it may be easy to forget that Marvel Studios is also prepping Captain America: The Winter Soldier at the same time. The first Captain America solo film to take place largely in the present day (we're assuming, at any rate) is gearing up its cast and while we've heard that Anthony Mackie is on board as The Falcon, and that Hugo Weaving has no interest in returning as The Red Skull, word has been largely mum on who will be menacing the star-spangled hero come April 4, 2014 (besides the Winter Soldier himself, of course). Until now.
Our first clue may have come directly from the source: Frank Grillo, who turned heads with his memorable performance in Joe Carnahan's The Grey, has hinted on his Twitter account that he's just screen tested to play the villainous Crossbones in the upcoming sequel:
"See Ya LA. It was a a good trip. Marvel was a lot of fun. Be cool if it works out. #CaptainAmerica"
"WOW. Badass fans that Marvel has. Fierce muthas. #bones"
"Once again, just wanted to tell you and I'll be talking about it all week… Frank Grillo has tested for Crossbone in the new Marvel movies"
"@BrianMichaelBendis Have it on reliable authority that Frank Grillo is THIS CLOSE to getting the role of Crossbones in the Marvel movies"
Crossbones doesn't usually make it out of the pages of Marvel Comics, but he's a familiar face – or rather, skull mask – to fans of Captain America. Having served as the henchman for not one but two separate Red Skulls, he is perhaps best known for his assassination attempt on Captain America, seemingly successful at the time, but ultimately proven a failure since Cap is currently alive and well in the Marvel Universe.
CraveOnline will be back with more Captain America: The Winter Soldier news after we get our grades back from The Taskmaster.
