Is Peter Parker Hanging Up The Webs For ‘Superior Spider-Man?’

It seems there's a new guy in the slightly-altered union suit, and Peter Parker's story ends. What?

Superior Spider-Man

What are you doing, Dan?

What are you doing, Dan?

After a lot of teasing that Amazing Spider-Man #700 is going to be such a big shocking deal that writer Dan Slott will have to go into hiding, news hits today on the eve of NYCC that yes, he very well might.

Check out this synopsis blurb from Marvel's press release today.

Peter Parker has spent a lifetime living up to the responsibilities his powers foisted upon him but his Amazing story finally ends dramatically in the historic Spider-Man #700. NOW! the new Spider-Man has arrived and he is better in every single way. Smarter, stronger…Superior.

So his story is coming to an end? Is that the big shocker? Peter quits being Spidey? Or maybe he loses his powers? I'm going to be optimistic here and not use the C-word… and I even liked Ben Reilly.

“This is still very much the world of Spider-Man," Slott assures us. "There may be a new Spider-Man here, doing things in a new and different way, but you’re going to see the Spider-cast reacting to this. You’re going to see how this Spider-Man will deal with our Spider-Man’s villains. How will he react to this Spider-Man’s supporting cast? That is clearly the world of this book. The world hasn’t changed, just the hero.”

Superior Spider-Man

Toe claws? TOE CLAWS? MY SPIDER-MAN 2099 SENSES ARE TINGLING! DARE I DREAM? Wait… "alien nose?" Um… I'm not… I don't… what's all this then?

“Spider-Man has learned a lot during his time as a super hero, making him not just amazing anymore, he’s more than that," said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief. "Dan and Ryan have Spider-Man on a path that will challenge him in every way. Just because Spider-Man is Superior, it doesn’t mean things are even close to getting easier!”

Ryan? Yeah, Ryan Stegman is the named artist. The teaser also mentioned Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli, but this release doesn't.

Then the release closes with these lines:

An all-new direction! An All-New Spider-Man! All-new justice! This is Superior Spider-Man NOW!

This January, Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman swing a new chapter in Peter Parker’s life in Superior Spider-Man #1!

So is Peter Parker quitting or is he sticking around? Well, for that, it's time to go to the Dan Slott Q&A over at There, he confirms that Dr. Octopus is finally going to kick the bucket, and new villains will try to lay claim to the name of Sinister Six. He also confirms Ramos and Camuncoli are sticking around, too.

Some choice quotes from Mr. Slott:

"One of the things we’ve been revealing around Marvel NOW! is the big, fun exciting thing of 'oh look, everyone’s switching books, everyone’s going to new pastures.' And yet, I refuse to leave [Laughs]. But that’s all because on some level, you’re getting an all-new Dan Slott. Remember that happy wacky guy? No, no, you’re getting the really messed up guy from Great Lakes Avengers and Arkham Asylum. Things are going to get dark, things are going to get weird, and when things get that dark and weird, you need a superior Spider-Man."

"In all seriousness, [Scarlet Spider writer] Chris [Yost] is our new writer on Avenging Spider-Man, and we’ve been keeping him in the loop about all the changes that are going on and what’s happening in Spider-Man’s world. And he’s pretty excited. He actually got to read #700 ahead of time and he wrote me a quick note: 'I’m an old man and dead inside, but you made me cry.'"

"This was a weird kind of synchronicity that we were building to this. And then when Marvel NOW! happened, it was a way for us to go, “We already have this major upheaval happening in the book that makes it a completely different thing, and that in its own way kind of fits into the world of Marvel NOW!.” It was just pure luck that we had something like this already planned."

"Passions run high and fast. And I expect many message boards to be consumed with flames as all this stuff goes down. But at the same time, I feel that once #700 is over, and when SUPERIOR launches, I think a lot of people are going to walk into this and go, “what have they done?” But when they get to the end of Superior Spider-Man #1, there will be a moment of, “oooh,” and then it’ll be safe for me to poke my head out and to walk the streets again."

So, I'm confused, but I've learned to trust Dan Slott. So I put it to all y'all. What do you make of all this?
