Sam Stosur won her second round matchup against Irina Falconi in comfortable fashion at the French Open today.
American Falconi, the World No.112, went down fairly easily, losing to Stosur for the second time this year, 6-1 6-4.
Stosur is on track to meet Victoria Azarenka in a possible quarter-final matchup. The World No.1 also won easily today, defeating German Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-1 6-1, a good sign after struggling against World No. 105 Alberta Brianti.
Jarmila Gajdosova is the other Australian woman remaining in the tournament but will face World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki tomorrow night.
More good news for Stosur, Serena Williams has bowed out of the tournament extremely early, losing in the first round to home-town favourite Virginie Razzano in an epic finish.
Williams won the first set 6-4 but lost the tiebreaker in the second 7-6 (5) after giving up six straight games and struggled early in the third as the unheralded Razzano took the first five games. Williams fought back to win the next games as Razzano struggled with cramps but came good behind the voice of the home crowd urging her on. The World No.111 eventually prevailed in a 23-minute final game where neither player could take an advantage over the other.
Williams had won all of her 17 clay court games in 2012 prior to the first round matchup with Razzano.
