With The Avengers out of the way and The Dark Knight Rises visible on the horizon, geeks are looking for the next big film to spread rumors about. J.J. Abrams' long-awaited Star Trek 2 seems to have filled the void, with the rumor du jour being that Benedict Cumberbatch, who has officially signed on to play the film's villain, is in fact playing Khan Noonien Singh, the popular villain from the original Star Trek II. That may not be true. At least, that's what the film's co-star Simon Pegg is saying.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Pegg reportedly seemed "annoyed" at the internet speculation that Cumberbatch was playing Ricardo Montalban's iconic villain. He described Cumberbatch's villain as, "not just another disgruntled alien. It's a really interesting… sort of… thing." He went on to clarify that, "It's not Khan. That's a myth. Everyone's saying it is, but it's not."
Pegg also reveals that the entire cast, who took the entire previous film to get together, will be in place at the start of Star Trek 2, and that "This time we had the benefit of being able to hit the ground running – we spent some time in the first one re-establishing the characters. Now we have a fully set-up group of people that we can just get on with straight away. So it ups the ante slightly, and we’ve all had more to do. So it’s totally incumbent on us to not drop the ball. It would be a disaster if it wasn’t as good as – or better than – the first one."
Simon Pegg seems like a straight-up guy, and we're ready to believe him. But in this day and age, obfuscation is the way to go when discussing highly anticipated projects, especially those based on source material fans are already in love with. Remember when Clark Gregg made CraveOnline personal assurances about his part in The Avengers? Well, we all know how that turned out. We're not saying that Pegg is wrong, and definitely not that he's lying, we just want to remind you to take every story of this ilk that isn't confirmed by the filmmakers with at least one grain of salt.
CraveOnline will be back with more Star Trek 2 news after we book an appointment with Mudd's women.
