James Bond is back in Skyfall, and he's here to stay. After the financial entanglements that delayed the 23rd James Bond film, leading to a four year gap between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, it now appears that the James Bond movies are back on their typical schedule of one new installment every two years. MI6 reported on the news from CinemaCon. They also reminded us that this could be a huge problem.

For it turns out that Skyfall is actually the last film in Daniel Craig's contract with EON Productions. He is obligated to star in three James Bond motion pictures, and while he won't necessarily be ousted for the fourth, as of James Bond 24 he'll have the freedom to turn the movies down if he so desires. Finding a new Bond, or Superman, or Batman, or any other major franchise icon is hell on our nerves here on the internet, since it guarantees months of rumor-mongering, speculation and an inevitable burnout leading to lost weekends, failed relationships and herpes. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we hope Craig stays on for a while. He's a great Bond, isn't he?

The two-year schedule appears to be the standard for Bond films, with 50 years as a motion picture franchise and 23 films to its credit. The gap between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall will turn out to be the second-longest in the franchise's history, tied at four years with the gap between Die Another Day and Casino Royale, and surpassed by the interminable wait between License to Kill and Goldeneye in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The faster schedule will also prevent Craig from getting long in the tooth anytime soon, provided he actually wishes to stay on board. Although with the rest of his films failing to get much traction with audiences – we barely even remember that Dream House came out last year – we imagine he'll want to stick it out a little longer.
