Let’s meet the best of the best of online sketch. Let’s meet Derrick Comedy.

Derrick Comedy represents the brass ring of online sketch, or perhaps it’s more that they captured that ring themselves. After wowing audiences on youtube for years they were able to make their own movie (Mystery Team) and have all gone on to work in television and beyond. Donald Glover (their breakout member) has easily become one of Hollywood’s A-list in a very short time. Their story is basically what every online sketch team is looking for. “Do the work and get discovered” might as well be the sales pitch for starting an online sketch team. Sadly it doesn’t work for many, but in the case of Derrick, it’s been a staggering success.

Created by Dominic Dierkes, DC Pierson, and Donald Glover along with director Dan Eckman, the name Derrick presumably comes from trying to find a “D” name the team didn’t already contain. Regardless these guys (and the rest of the Derrick Comedy team) have created some of the best of sketch. Here’s a taste:

I have no idea why I love that one so much, but it’s easily in my top 5 sketches of all time. Nobody seems to like my homemade WQXR staff T-shirt though. Sad. Here’s another winner from the D-Team (get it?) apologizes to the fans of Emo music for just how bad that sketch has served them. Extra points to DC Pierson for helming that one. Here’s DC and Donald Glover going head to head in one of the Derrick favorites:

Here’s a sketch that takes aim at all the shows like “24” and their continuous overuse of one annoying trope:

Last but not least, let’s look at the sketch that originally put Derrick on the map. It’s Bro Rape (yup, that’s what it’s called) and it’s pretty darn funny. Also it has almost 10 MILLION hits. Good job Derrick, very good job.

So there’s Derrick in all its glory. You can really see the age in these videos, as they were probably shot in cameras no longer used commonly today. That might be a great example of their genius however, as even without the gloss of a modern video they are easily the rival of anything online. Perhaps the modern glossy videos are making up for something Derrick had all along, serious comedic chops. Stay tuned to for more Sketch Feast, and beyond!
