"The new special forces unit, codenamed 'Cobra,' will protect us where the Joes could not."
We're the first to admit it: we weren't fans of Stephen Sommers' 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. In fact, it took us two whole weeks just to explain most of the things that were wrong with it. But the sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, looks like a step up. Which is fitting, since it was directed by Jon M. Chu, the director of Step Up 2 The Streets and Step Up 3D. The new trailer, courtesy of Machinima, finally gives us a closer look at the sequel's storyline. The Joes are dead – you'll notice that Channing Tatum is conspicuously absent after the first few seconds of the trailer – and it's up to Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis and Snake Eyes (of course) to take down Cobra, which has taken control of the United States and finally given Cobra Commander the costume he should have had in the first place.
Everything about G.I. Joe: Retaliation seems to indicate that the filmmakers took the last film as a vague backstory, banishing the shamefully goofy tone in favor of something just as fun, but also something we can take halfway seriously for a couple of hours. It might let us down, but when was the last time you found yourself looking forward to a franchise with such a shoddy previous installment? Oh yes, it was Fast Five, also starring Dwayne Johnson. Maybe he's got the magic touch. We'll find out on June 29, when G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens in theaters.
CraveOnline will be back with more G.I. Joe: Retaliation news after we get tough and go Bruce Willis.
