Jessica Chastain in Talks for Iron Man 3 Role

The hot young Oscar nominee would play a scientist who sounds a lot like 'Extremis' protagonist Maya Hansen.

After one of the most impressive years on any actor's record, Jessica Chastain – the star of The Tree of Life, The Help, Coriolanus, Take Shelter and Texas Killing Fields (all in 2011) – is going to Disneyland. Well, sort of. Disney owns Marvel Studios, and Chastain is now in talks to join the cast of Iron Man 3. Pepper Potts is going to get so jealous…

Deadline reports that Chastain has been offered the lead role of a scientist with an IQ on par with Tony Stark's. Actually, Deadline reports that she's been offered the role before, only to turn it down because of scheduling conflicts. But that situation has apparently resolved itself, and Chastain is rushing ahead of a pack of leading ladies who were ready to take her place, including Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers). Although The Help raked in the cash over the summer, Iron Man 3 would be the first old-fashioned live-action blockbuster for the actress, who earned her first Academy Award nomination this year (her The Help co-star, Octavia Spencer, won instead). She'll be joined in the cast by returning stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and newcomers Guy Pearce and, last we heard, Ben Kingsley as an as-yet unnamed villain.

As for who exactly Chastain is playing, there are no names yet, but now that we know that Marvel is pushing the "Extremis" storyline, she could be getting ready to portray Maya Hansen, an ex-girlfriend of Tony Stark who, in the original mini-series, was partly responsible for creating the Extremis Virus in the first place. It certainly fits the description. What do you think?

CraveOnline will be back with more Iron Man 3 news after we get this bucket off our head.
