Some people don't seem to realize it, but superhero movies need an orchestral score. Superhero movies elevate their heroes and villains to mythological heights (if they didn't already start there), and a pulsing, iconic theme does the trick. You can remember Danny Elfman's theme music to Batman, but Daredevil made do with pop songs, and look how that turned out. Actually, don't do that… look how this turned out: Alan Silvestri's orchestral theme for The Avengers, opening May 4 (as if you didn't know).

We're not music critics, but suffice it to say, we like it. It's got a reasonably memorable hook, and sets the tone for adventure. Just the kind of work we'd expect from Alan Silvestri. If you recognize the mighty name of Alan Silvestri, you are an inherently good person, and our friend. He contributed the iconic themes for Forrest Gump and Back to the Future, and like most hard-working composers has also contributed to some less than memorable motion pictures as well, like Judge Dredd and Super Mario Bros. Still, we don't think anyone's ever gone out of their way to complain about the score on any of the duds, have they?

What do you think of Alan Silvestri's Avengers theme? Does it set the stage for glory or what?
