Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23KOs) has been on somewhat of a tear as of late. Alvarado is coming off a grueling but impressive victory over former lightweight title holder Breidis Prescott. On Saturday night, Alvarado took on the surprisingly game Mauricio Herrera(18-2, 7KOs) on the undercard of Rios-Abril.
As soon as the opening bell sounded Alvarado immediately came forward as he is known to do behind slashing left hooks and quick jabs that didn't land but pushed Herrera back. Herrera looked very comfortable in the early rounds against the ropes as he repeated landed counters on the charging Alvarado. During the second, Herrera stood toe to toe with the much bigger Alvarado but continued to answer each of his opponent's attacks with swift right hands and a thudding jab.
The action was intense as both men clearly came to go to war. Herrera was the one who was showing much more damage on his face however.
In the third, Alvarado forced Herrera to continue to trade with him as Herrera attempted to box the brawler. The pressure that Alvarado brought was insanely aggressive. After the action slowed down over the new few rounds, Alvarado began to rock Herrera in the ninth.
Herrera showed great heart throughout in what was definitely the best fight of the night. Alvarado was looking for the kill all the way up to the final bell; but Herrera, broken and bloodied, did a great job in surviving "Mile High's" onslaught.
Alvarado was awarded the victory with a ten-round unanimous decision. The scores were 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94.
Mike Alvarado continues to be a warrior who always comes to fight. So I say to top flight competition at this weight class : PLEASE, GIVE THIS MAN A FIGHT. He deserves it.
