"Evacuation may be futile."

With all the hubbub building up to The Avengers, we've been overlooking somebody: Cobie Smulders, the "How I Met Your Mother" star who bested the competition (which included Joss Whedon alumni Morena Baccarin) to earn the coveted role of Maria Hill in Marvel's latest blockbuster. Maria Hill became a very important character in the Marvel Comics, eventually taking over as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., so maybe we should be paying closer attention. That's okay, because Cobie's got us covered. In last night's episode of "The Late Show with David Letterman," she premiered a new clip from The Avengers which shows her going toe-to-toe with Samuel L. Jackson. Maybe he'd be a little nicer to her if he knew she was gunning for his job.

The clip, of course, reveals nothing of value besides the fact that the Tesseract (which we still wish they would just call "The Cosmic Cube," not like it matters) is going to be a problem, which we probably all predicted. It's just a terse scene about getting ready for a disaster, the kind common to most action movies with big consequences. Marvel has been really picky about not revealing jack squat about their ridiculously anticipated production, making us wonder… What have they got to hide? Is it stinky, or is there something about the plot that's actually worth hiding? You know, like Skrulls?
