Thanks to a guy who knows a guy who told a guy, MCV is reporting that both Microsoft and Sony will debut their next-next gen home consoles at E3 this year in June. The site’s sources are apparently close to the projects, yet for obvious reasons can’t be revealed.
Therefore, take this rumor with a grain of salt. Please.
What isn’t rumor, however, is the fact that Nintendo plans to reveal more details about their next console, Wii U, at E3 as well. If the rumors of a new Xbox and PlayStation are true, then this year’s E3 will be quite large, representing the first time in the trade show’s history that all three console manufacturers have showed off their respective consoles alongside one another.
However, as we’ve said time and time again, the likelihood of seeing a new Xbox and PlayStation seems very small. Let us not forget that Microsoft and Sony have constantly stressed that their current systems are made with a 10-year life cycle in mind. That puts the Xbox 360 into 2015, while the PS3 would live until 2016. It doesn’t take a genius to realize those dates are still pretty far off. So the chances of seeing brand new consoles from both manufacturers at this year’s E3? Seems far-fetched to us.
But we’re not shooting down this rumor entirely just yet. We’ll find out one way or the other in June of this year when E3 kicks off.
