Benedict Cumberbatch IS the ‘Star Trek 2’ Villain!

The Sherlock star has been tapped to play the Big Bad in J.J. Abram's upcoming sequel. But who will he play?

You know, it's a pretty damned good time to be Benedict Cumberbatch right about now. The man with the world's most awesome name (toppling the previous title-holder, Wolf Blitzer) has a mega-hit series in BBC's Sherlock, major roles in two of the season's most acclaimed films, War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and will play the voice of the dragon Smaug in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. And somehow it just got better. Variety reports that Cumberbatch has been tapped to play the villain in J.J. Abram's Star Trek 2.

Naturally, since it's a J.J. Abrams joint, we have no idea who he'll be playing. Is this the same part Benicio Del Toro turned down or something else altogether? They're not normally actors who'd be vying for the same part, but in the Star Trek universe, who knows? Rumors range from Khan Noonien Singh to, at least from a few deluded fellows, the womanizing Harvey Mudd. Of course, he could be somebody new altogether. Oh, J.J… give us something to work with.

We'll be back with more Benedict Cumberbatch news, if we can get it through our boring brains.
