So Bridesmaids made enough money in 2011 to buy and sell your ass ten times over, and surprise! After the PGA nominations yesterday it's actually a major Best Picture Oscar contender. Universal is naturally thinking sequel. Star and co-writer Kristen Wiig? Eh… Not so much. She's focused on other projects right now, so Universal is seriously considering pushing forward with Bridesmaids 2 without her. In fact, it seems Universal thinks that most of the ensemble cast is more-or-less disposable except scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Universal is currently looking at story possibilities. Says one insider, "We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward." As for us, we suspect after the popularity of The Hangover Part II, "the right concept" will probably turn out to be a cut-and-paste remake of the original film. As for the cast and crew, it seems that Judd Apatow probably wouldn't return without Wiig and her co-writer Annie Mumolo, and the cast is allegedly unhappy with their measily $100,000 bonuses after the blockbuster success of Bridesmaids, which grossed over $288 million worldwide from a paltry $32.5 million budget. Yeah, Universal could have afforded more.
What do you think? Is there a Bridesmaids 2 without Kristen Wiig? Or would it have inevitably turned into a disappointing rehash with the same characters going through the same "bridesmaids" kind of storyline?
CraveOnline will be back with more Bridesmaids 2 news after we get back from Paris.
