Death Race, the little franchise that could, continues to speed along on DVD and Blu-Ray after Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of the original Paul Bartel classic in 2008. Director Roel Reine took over the franchise for 2011's Death Race 2, which we actually considered a slight improvement on Anderson's "original," and he's returning for the third film, currently shooting in South Africa. Luke Goss also returns as the original Frankenstein – who of course dies at the beginning of Death Race 1, only to be replaced by Jason Statham – and he'll be joined by such other former cast members as Mortal Kombat's Robin Shou, Pulp Fiction's Ving Rhames and Machete's Danny Trejo. They'll be joined this time out by Mission: Impossible 2's Dougray Scott, whom you may remember was originally cast as Wolverine in Bryan Singer's first X-Men movie, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Oh boy, we bet he's still pissed about that.
The official plot synopsis, courtesy of Universal, is as follows:
Convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas, aka Frankenstein, is a superstar driver in the brutal prison yard demolition derby known as Death Race. Only one victory away from winning freedom for himself and his pit crew, Lucas is plunged into an all-new competition more vicious than anything he has experienced before. Pitted against his most ruthless adversaries ever, Lucas fights to keep himself and his team alive in a race in South Africa's infernal Kalahari Desert. With powerful forces at work behind the scenes to ensure his defeat, will Lucas' determination to win at all costs mean the end of the road for him?
CraveOnline will be back with more Death Race news after we mow down some of the elderly, because hey… bonus points.
