George Lucas Needs a New MacGuffin for ‘Indiana Jones 5’

We've got some ideas for you, George!

It's a little amazing after the overall cultural malaise that followed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that anyone would be crying out for a new installment, but this is Hollywood, it still made money, and so naturally Spielberg and Lucas are talking about it. Vulture talked to George Lucas at the premiere of The Adventures of Tintin this week and asked him where he's at. His response?

Quoth the Lucas: "I told [Steven Spielberg] about the story, but I really haven't found the MacGuffin yet. I mean, I know what it's about, but I just have to find a MacGuffin that fits into the arena we're working in."

For those who don't know, a "MacGuffin" is a plot device that matters to the characters, but isn't important in and of itself. It's just an excuse for the hero to get out of the house. The Maltese Falcon was a MacGuffin. The Allspark was a MacGuffin in Transformers. The Crystal Skull was the MacGuffin in the last Indiana Jones movie, although if you ask us the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail and the Sankara stones of Temple of Doom were a little too integrated into the overall storylines of the earlier movies to quite qualify for the moniker. So basically, Lucas just needs a new (read: old) historical relic to hang his plot on for the fifth film.

We're happy to help, even if his extended family comes along for the ride next time, draining our overall interest. History and mythology are filled with these kinds of things. A brief list to get your creative juices flowing, George: The Spear of Longinus, The Chains of Fenrir, The Book of the Dead, The Golden Fleece, The Tree of Life, The Hammer of Thor, The Ankh of Osiris, Excalibur… What else? If there absolutely has to be a new Indiana Jones movie, what would you like him to chase after next time?

CraveOnline will be back with more Indiana Jones 5 movies as soon as we put this new lock on our fridge.
