No Rest for the Nerdy – Vol. 37

Erik's dead, we're celebrating with video games...

Joey, Mike, Alex and Paulby Joey, Mike, Alex and Paul

We never stop playing video games. That’s a fact. Even after we call it quits for the week we still look forward to getting home and continuing our digital conquests. It’s our life blood. So we thought it would be fun to share with everyone what our gaming intentions are for the weekend so you guys can get a sense of what we're playing and enjoying on a weekly, non-formal basis. Yes, this concept isn't new to the internet. But hey, we kind of want to join in on the fun. Can you blame us for that? So without further ado, here’s what we’re playing this weekend that will forfeit any semblance of rest…

Please feel free to sound off below to let us know what your gaming plans are this weekend.

Also, Erik is alive. He's just…busy.

mikeMike White: A recent battle with illness has slowed me down a bit but thankfully the new Xbox arrived and was set up before this all went down. Now that I’m almost fully recovered I am looking forward to a peaceful weekend of comfort and relaxation. Who am I kidding? I’ll be spending my weekend driving from Northern Delaware to a part of North Carolina I’ve never been to or even heard of. The trip takes the better part of nine hours each way. That’s not the longest I’ve driven by far but let’s be honest, there are sections of Virginia and Carolina that aren’t much to look at and seem to go on forever.

I have a few hours to myself this morning before we leave and I should get a nice chunk of play time on Sunday when we return. On a whim, and seduced by the name, I downloaded the trial version of The Baconing for XBLA. The Baconing is the third edition to the Deathspank line of games created by Ron Gilbert. Coming off solid endorsements for the two previous games in the series by Joey, I’m expecting this one to be quite entertaining.

If I’m feeling rather courageous after my weekend excursion I also downloaded the Battlefield 3 beta. From all I’ve seen and heard so far this could be the first FPS I purchase for my Xbox. Or do I get it on the PC? I hate having options.

alexAlex Keen: With a newborn in the house, my gaming is going to be lessened considerably.  No biggie, she deserves my free time, right?  When I get some free time, I’ll be giving Worms Ultimate Mayhem a shot.  I’ve enjoyed the Worms games so far (not to the extent of the die hards) and am always willing to give another arcade title a shot.

I also downloaded the Kinect Sesame Street game for my toddler to enjoy.  We haven’t turned it on just yet but it has a ton of potential coming from Double Fine.  My biggest fear is that the demo will be too short and my little guy will demand more.

If I get free time for me (not likely), I’ll fire up Gears of War 3 in arcade mode.  I recently finished up the single player on Normal and I look forward to a new challenge.

paulPaul Tamburro: Today I will be purchasing my copy of FIFA 12, and then I will unfortunately be nowhere near the vicinity of my Xbox until Sunday. I can imagine that the feeling of having the game in my possession without being able to play it is going to feel the same as it did back when I was a kid, going on family holidays and using my spending money they had given me to purchase SNES games, then having to wait for 2 weeks until I got the chance to play them.

I was prepared for this FIFA to continue with the EA trend of being a re-release of FIFA 11 but with altered teams and a couple of new features, but after playing the demo it seems the defensive gameplay is very different and a lot more complex. Strangely they seem to have now suddenly decided to market the FIFA series to a US audience, but I’m not sure if the 164-button control scheme will really connect with newcomers.

Looks like I’m stuck with playing irate Liverpudlians.

joeyJoey Davidson: My pile of games to play and review has become absolutely obnoxious; the problem? There's no damn end in sight… at all. I'm staring at review copies of three games, plus a handful of quality titles I'm no where near finished wrestling with.

One of the review games is Rage from id Software. I'd love, love, love to tell you about this one. Really. But, I can't, that would be breaking the review embargo. Know that I have it, am playing it and look forward to breaks in my day to settle back in. So far, the game is REDACTED.

I'm also reviewing a copy of FIFA 12. That one got to us a little late by way of EA. That's fine, no worries, last week would have actually been worse had it been here on time. So, yes, more soccer (or football, or whatever). I've been a fan of the series since college, so it's nice to return to the pitch this year. The game seems to have undergone a lot of quality changes, so I'm excited to get way into it and figure out what's good.

I also have a few chapters left in Gears 3…my god.
