A police spokeswoman released a statement concerning the arrest, saying:  "A 30-year-old man from Wynyard has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of a class A drug.

"He is currently being questioned by police and inquiries are ongoing."

This is Bramble’s second run-in with the law in the past 2 years, after he was arrested by Northumbria police in 2010 over an alleged rape in Newcastle. He was later released without being charged.

Bramble’s brother Tesfaye was sentenced to four and a half years last month for raping a 19-year-old girl a year ago. Tesfaye was also a professional football player for Stevenage Borough, although he failed to reach the same level as Titus, who along with playing for Sunderland since 2007 has also played for the England Under-21’s.

Bramble also had an underwhelming stint for Newcastle, with fans branding him “Titus Shambles” following multiple mistakes he made in games for the Gunners.

A Sunderland spokesperson said: "The club is looking into this matter but due to ongoing police investigations is unable to comment further at this stage."
