2008 brought us the hit action movie Wanted, starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie. Fans of the movie appreciated its over the top action and… presumably something else. Probably Angelina Jolie's "Angelina Jolie"-ness, we don't know. Because fans of the comic book Wanted were endlessly disappointed that Russian-Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov, or at least one of the higher ups in production, decided to change every single thing about the original mini-series after the very first issue. Well, those first folks are going to be really excited that Wanted 2, in development since 2009, is finally moving forward again, with original screenwriters Derek Haas and Michael Brandt hard at work on a new script.
Heat Vision reported the news, revealing that Haas and Brandt will be working off a draft written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, whose previous writing credits included such hopefully unrelated films as Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie and The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (which we suspect has little to do with King Triton's wedding night). Haas and Brandt are also known for their work on such films as 3:10 to Yuma, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Catch That Kid.
Unfortunately, the sequel will probably delay what many of us are hoping for: an eventual reboot of the franchise that actually adapts Mark Millar's and J.G. Jones's original story, complete with an almost Chuck Pahlaniuk-like theme of amoral liberation and the highly subversive conceit that supervillains are real, defeated all the superheroes many years ago, and now rule a world that has forgotten that Superman and Batman ever existed outside of the funny pages. Instead, Wanted 2 will probably provide more of the same bizarreness we got in the first Wanted: "virtuous" assassins taking orders from a magic loom, for some reason, and bullets that curve. That's so much more fun that superpowered sociopaths living out all the audience's decadent fantasies and then beating the hell from each other in an enormously entertaining fashion.
What can we say? We liked the book better. But the movie version of Wanted has its fans, and like we said, they're probably really happy that the old team is getting back together. Are you among them?
CraveOnline will be back with more Wanted 2 news after we pull Mr. Rictus away from those goats.
