Fantasy Football Focus: Week 3

Working our way to the Championship one week at a time.

James LeBeauby James LeBeau

Fantasy football is a boom or bust contest that rises and falls on the trends of the NFL. This year, it's been all about the passing and all about the scoring and if the two weeks we've seen this year is any indication, it's going to be a wild year. Through these first two weeks, their has been a record amount of passing being done with 15,771 yards being netted through the air. As you can guess, this increase in passing has translated to an increase in scoring as a new record for that has been set throughout the first two week as well, which is 172 touchdowns. Another interesting stat is that only one winning team so far this season has scored less than 21 (Jacksonville), that's a decrease of 14 from a year ago.

All in all, this adds up to exactly what the NFL wants, more excitement. And if you're lucky enough to have players that are benefiting from this scoring output than more power to you and let's home it keeps up.

Start of the Week

Steve Smith, WR, Carolina Panthers

Steve Smith has again returned to fantasy football relevance thanks to the second coming of Steve Young, Cam Newton. OK, maybe that comparison might end up being a disservice to Newton who, against predictions, has been lighting it up so far this year. Through 2 weeks, smith has been Newtons favorite target, catching 14 catches for 334 yards and two touchdowns. With Jacksonville on the horizon for week 3, he could be in for a huge game.

Last Week Result: Tim Hightower, RB, Washington Redskins 10 pts (106 total yards)

Sit of the Week

Felix Jones, RB, Dallas Cowboys

With Tony Romo hurt yet expected to play, the Cowboys are expected to run the ball heavily to relieve the pressure on him. So, why am I putting Jones on the sit pile? It's simple, the guy has a bad shoulder and the early results of him playing in pain weren't anything to write home about. Expect Tashard Choice and DeMarco Murray to handle the majority of the rushing choirs.

Last Week Result: Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons 2 pts (2 rec, 25 yds)
