NO, REALLY: ‘Space Invaders: The Movie’ is Coming

"Drop down! Increase speed! Reverse direction!"

Videogame movies are still the black sheep of Hollywood. Everyone wants to make them, but nobody seems particularly proud of it and there's never been a particularly good one we can all point to, Batman Begins-style, and say "That's how it's done." It doesn't seem like that's going to change any time soon with adaptations like Asteroids and now Space Invaders coming down the pipe. Oh yes, Space Invaders: The Movie. Thanks Hollywood!

Hollywood Reporter reports that Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of the Transformers franchise, has acquired the rights to the classic videogame Space Invaders along with Gigi Pritzaker of Odd Lot Entertainment. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, you may remember is the same individual who wants Roland Emmerich to direct Asteroids: The Movie. You may commence sighing deeply.

Since Space Invaders is a thoroughly plotless videogame, pitting an anonymous spacecraft against an unstoppable armada of aliens – whose tactics are limited to dropping down, increasing speed and reversing direction – it's safe to say that what the producers are looking for is a stand alone alien invasion movie that they can just slap the title Space Invaders onto. Although the game is historically significant, it's not considered as "cool" as such modern pap as Call of Duty or Gears of War, making us wonder if all the bother is really necessary. We imagine more people avoiding a movie because it's called Space Invaders than seeking out specifically for that same title.

CRAVE Online will return with more Space Invaders news… because apparently we'll have to. Sighing deeply in 3… 2… 1… Sigh…
