Today is quite the milestone. Sonic the Hedgehog has turned 20. Now begins the long process of counting down the days until he turns 21 in the States (364 days to go, buddy!), so the furry, blue hedgehog can hit up the bar to drink away the nightmares of seeing all those little critters being captured and tortured by Dr. Robotnik. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
To celebrate the anniversary occasion, Sega has released a demo for the latest, upcoming Sonic game, Sonic Generations. The demo is officially on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network right now. In said demo you’ll be able to play the iconic Green Hill Zone level re-imagined in HD as classic 2-D Sonic. You know, the plump one. However, take note that this demo will only be available for a limited time of 20 days. So you might as well take advantage while you can.
Being completely honest for a hot second, Sonic Generations is the first Sonic game in quite some time that actually looks fantastic. The fusion of old school and new school is a nice touch by Sega, making sure the game caters to both classic fans of the character and the newer generation whippersnappers. And to reiterate, old school, fat Sonic looks hysterical. So you win our attention through laughter, Sega. Well played.
As an added note (related only because Sonic is involved), Sega has also announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will once again appear as a float during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to honor the character’s 20th anniversary. Yay, floats!
