It turns out that 2011 is not the year of the Rabbit. According to Marvel, it’s The Year of the X-Men.
Astute comic book fans may have noticed that Marvel didn’t release their full lineup of X-Men related books in the May solicitations. Earlier today, Marvel offered the first glimpse of what’s happening in the X-titles with a teaser for MMXI—The Year of the X-Men. Of course, MMXI are simply the Roman numerals for 2011.
The image in question is the cover of New Mutants #25, which appears to depict the members of the team hunting down X-Man and Blink with a caption that reads "We will get them, no matter what."
For those of you who may not be familiar with him, X-Man is an alternate timeline child of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey who debuted during the Age of Apocalypse storyline before crossing over to the main Marvel universe. He was last seen in the pages of Dark X-Men, where he was captured and tortured mercilessly by Norman Osborn.
His companion, Blink also played a big role in the Age of Apocalypse. But this appears to the original Blink, who was resurrected last year during the X-Necrosha event by the Black Queen, Selene. During her most recent appearance, Blink was freed of Selene’s influence and turned down an offer to join the X-Men.
Besides the slight Age of Apocalypse connection, the only thing X-Man and Blink seem to have in common is that they are two of the most powerful mutants currently unaffiliated with the X-Men and their extended community on Utopia.
A creative team for New Mutants #25 has not yet been announced, but Marvel is expected to make a major X-Men announcement at next month’s C2E2.
