Rickey Gervais Invades 'The Office'

After years of denials, Ricky Gervais will finally reprise his role as David Brent from the original BBC version of "The Office." And surprisingly, it had nothing to do with Gervais’ wild performance at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this week.

According to New York Magazine’s Vulture Blog, the cameo appearance was actually filmed last September when Gervais was in Los Angeles for the Emmy Awards. And as long suspected, the scene will feature David Brent and his equally clueless American counterpart, Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

"Ricky had wanted to do something [with the U.S. ‘Office’] and it felt like we shouldn’t go the whole series without them connecting," explained "The Office" showrunner Pail Lieberstein. "But we had some issues to work out, like how does David Brent live in the world of Michael Scott."

The scene was shot outside of the Dunder-Mifflin office to allow David and Michael to meet without the distraction of the documentary crew getting in the way.

"It’s outside of the office, and it’s just the two of them interacting," said Lieberstein. "It’s just a little nod to Steve and his final year."

Lieberstein also elaborated on the unusual steps that were taken to preserve the surprise.

"We didn’t even tell NBC at first," related Lieberstein . "So [Ricky Gervais] worked for free. But don’t print that — it might get him in trouble with the INS."

However, if fans are expected an epic confrontation, they’re going to be disappointed. Lieberstein indicated that the cameo would be "a little more than if you blink, you’ll miss it, but if you don’t set your TiVo right, you’ll miss it."

Gervais’ guest appearance will air on the January 27th episode of "The Office" on NBC.
