PlayStation Home Totally Integrates w/ Killzone 3

Let’s be honest for a hot second, the usefulness of PlayStation Home is pretty much zilch. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re scratching your head right now, asking, “What the hell is PlayStation Home?” Most gamers, especially the hardcore, never use the built-in PlayStation 3 feature that lets you recreate yourself in a virtual space and go shopping for virtual items. Or, at least I think that’s what you do in Home. Honestly, it’s been forever since I last dared enter that micro-transaction money pit.

But Sony is trying something new with PlayStation Home. An initiative that actually might get core gamers like myself to pop into the service on purpose, instead of by accident like when you mean to go to the PlayStation Store but accidentally select Home. Man, that shit is frustrating.

Today Sony has announced the Total Game Integration program for PlayStation Home. The first major PlayStation title this initiative will tie into is none other than Guerrilla Games’ Killzone 3. Total Game Integration plans to “extend the Killzone 3 experience” into the Home service. Beginning on January 27, the Killzone 3 Total Game Integration will kick off with a Helghast invasion of PlayStation Home. The Central Plaza hub environment of Home will get a Killzone makeover and act as the “last stand” camp for ISA troops. From the hub you’ll be able to access a series of games set across three different levels. Completion of all three levels will reward players with Unlock Points that can be redeemed and spent on actual in-game weapons for Killzone 3’s multiplayer.

Users can also opt to pre-order Kilzone 3 from within PlayStation Home which will net them an exclusive Helghast jet pack uniform (pictured above) for their Home avatar as a gift. Furthermore, because is handling the pre-orders through Home, players will also get to take advantage of the gift with purchase bundle for Killzone 3. This bundle features the Unlock and Load Pack, including an exclusive PSN code for an instant three Unlock Points, as well as the Killzone 3 Retro Map Pack.

“PlayStation Home has seen tremendous growth in the last year and now features hundreds of games, with more coming all the time,” said Jack Buser, director of PlayStation Home, SCEA. “The introduction of Total Game Integration is another huge step forward, allowing Home to directly affect gameplay in your favorite PlayStation 3 titles.”


I don’t think this is going to completely change core gamers feelings on the PlayStation Home service. But it’s a step in the right direction. As Mr. Buser says, Total Game Integration is a great idea to not only cross-promote Sony’s exclusive titles, but also get people active with a service that is usually shunned for being both pointless and useless. And he’s right. Because I will definitely be checking out Home starting January 27 for my chance to get a leg up on the competition for Killzone 3 multiplayer.
