Holy hell, this is insane.
Let’s talk about the crazy ordeal that a high school senior named Summer went through recently all because she wore a shirt that violated dress code.
Summer, who happens to be an honor roll student with a 4.4. GPA at Hickory Ridge High School in Charlotte, NC, decided to wear an off-the-shoulder shirt one day. And boy, the principal did not like that at all. During lunch, the principal asked her to cover up and put on a jacket because her shirt was in violation of the school’s dress code. Summer borrowed a jacket from a friend and put it on. But that wasn’t the end of this issue. The principal still insisted she go to the control room (whatever that is) to change.
Let’s look at this shirt:
Because Summer and the principal haven’t had the best relationship during Summer’s tenure, Summer’s mom asked that the school administrators call her before disciplining her daughter, so Summer refused to change until she got in contact with her mother.
The principal and Summer couldn’t reach Summer’s mom, so Summer found herself with the principal and a School Resource Officer in the school’s auditorium after the principal asked the other students to leave. Summer also notes that the officer had his hand on his gun.
Then the principal said this:
“I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.”
Good thing for Summer her mom finally called back.
Eventually Summer did head to the control room where the principal told her she would be suspended for ten days and not allowed to attend graduation ceremonies, simply because she was “insubordinate.”
“It’s just sad because I worked so hard for four years to walk across that stage,” Summer told WHAS. “We have drug dealers walking across that stage, we have sex offenders walking across that stage and then the 4.4 student who showed her shoulders can’t. This is my life, I’m on a pre-med track. A full ride means so much and that is on the line right now.”
What do you all think? Is this punishment simply unnecessary?
