Bio

You normally cannot say that being a writer is in someone's blood, but in the case of Zoe Kazan, it's difficult not to come to such a conclusion. Zoe Swicord Kazan was born on September 9, 1983 in Los Angeles, California. Her parents, Robin Swicord and Nicholas Kazan, were screenwriters themselves, with Zoe's grandparents, Molly (Thacher) Kazan and Elia Kazan, being a playwright and film and theatre director respectively. Zoe is also a direct descendant of classicist and college administrator Thomas Anthony Thacher, Yale president Jeremiah Day, and founding father Roger Sherman. This might help explain why she attended Yale University for her BA in Theatre.

Since it's tough and incredibly time-consuming to getting a play or feature film produced, Zoe was able to land several acting gigs and make a name from herself in that light before ever getting any of her works put on screen or stage. After her first two acting roles in "Swordswallowers and Thin Men" and "The Savages," she set her sights on stage acting as well, with the 2006 off-Broadway revival of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie being her first official role in that environment. Since then she's continued to act in both venues.

In 2008, Zoe made her Broadway debut in Come Back, Little Sheba. By 2009, Zoe's first play, Absalom, premiered at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, KY. To top that all off, she not only wrote, but starred in the 2012 romantic dramedy, "Ruby Sparks." She played the title characters, with her long-time boyfriend, Paul Dano, as the lead male. Two years later, she starred in "In Your Eyes," penned by none other than "The Avengers" screenwriter and director, Joss Whedon.
