Sibel Kekilli is a German-born actress of Turkish descent probably best known to American audiences for her role as Shae, the camp follower/prostitute in “Game of Thrones.” She first appeared in the episode entitled “Baelor.”
She actually turned down the role of Shae when it was first offered, but the producers “luckily convinced me and made me change my mind. Although it’s a small part in the series, it is really something special.”
Her parents were working-class immigrants from Turkey. Sibel Kekilli is often annoyed by Germany’s focus on her immigrant roots. She said, “If you move to Canada, after a few years you call yourself Canadian. In Germany, it’s difficult to belong. Sooner or later, directors in Germany will start casting without regard to where a person is from. It shouldn’t matter anymore.”

When she graduated high school at 16, she completed an apprenticeship as a public administration employee at the local city government. She worked in the Municipal Waste Disposal Office, as well as a waitress and shop assistant.
