Ashley Wagner is an American figure skater who recently landed on the 2014 US Figure Skating team.
Ashley Wagner was chosen for the team despite a poor recent performance, which sparked controversy. She is the 2012 Four Continents champion, 2012 Grand Prix Final silver medalist, 2012 Skate America champion, 2012 and 2013 Trophee Eric Bompard champion and 2012 and 2013 U.S. national champion. She wrote on Twitter: “Figure skater. Two-time US National Champion. Ice cream enthusiast. Thanks, Mom & Covergirl.”
Ashley Wagner was born on a U.S. Army base in Germany where her father was stationed at the time. Due to her father’s career, she moved a lot as a child and has lived in Alaska, Kansas, Washington State and Virginia. Though she now lives in Southern California, she considers Seabeck, Washington her home.

Ashley Wagner discovered skating in Alaska when she was five, and her mother told her she had to choose between skating and ballet. In 1998, Ashley watched as Tara Lipinski won Gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics, and from then on Ashley knew she wanted to be an Olympian.
Unlike most skaters, she spins and jumps clockwise.
Ashley Wagner attended West Potomac High School and Northern Virginia Community College. She described herself as a “girly-girl.”
In getting her place on the 2014 team, she bumped Mirai Nagasu off the team, even though Ashley fell twice in her routines. The skating federation said they chose Ashley over Nagasu because of Nagasu’s spotty record over the past 12 months. Others claim Ashley was chosen for her All-American girl looks.
After hearing she would join the team, Ashley Wagner said, “I’m not a crier, but when I heard the news I dropped to my knees and started crying.” She added later, “I’m fully prepared to get people saying, ‘Why are you on the team? How did that happen?'…but I’m also prepared to say, OK, the hard part’s over. I made it onto the team.”
Interestingly, she said she’ll be skating in Sochi to Pink Floyd, something “a little more rock and roll and sexy.”
She wrote her favorite book is Atonement and A Thousand Splendid Suns; her favorite TV shows are “The Office” and “Gilmore Girls;” her favorite drink is lemonade; and her favorite skater is Tara Lipinski.
Nike sponsored her in 2012, and in 2013 she was named as a face of Covergirl. Ashley Wagner currently resides in Southern California.
