A few weeks after Game of Thrones fans took the punch to the gut that was the announcement that the final season of the show won’t air until 2019, HBO revealed that we won’t stop living the life of constant waiting even after season eight. The Game of Thrones spinoffs won’t hit the screen until 2020. At least.
But the good part is that the HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys revealed that there will be potentially five Game of Thrones spinoffs. Prequels to be exact, as they will depict events that happened in the world of Westeros before season 1 of the show.
There are five of them. If we do a pilot and series, nothing is going to air on HBO until at least a year after the final season. We’re not doing a final season and then, “Following it at 11 p.m. …” There’s no timetable. Not everybody is on the same schedule.
It’s still unclear how many of them will air, as that is for the HBO’s development pipeline to decide once they get a finished product. It’s even possible that we won’t get a single one if they are not up to HBO’s high standard. But then again, if all of them are great… our lives are fully going to be immersed in Westeros.
Another good news to make all the waiting that much easier is that George R.R. Martin, the writer of the books Game of Thrones is based on, is working on all of the independent projects. Bloys told the Hollywood Reporter that all the prequels will be filled with completely new characters. Although, that might not be so and the network is keeping it as a surprise.
The fans are most clamoring for a ser Davos backstory, as well as Brienne of Tarth’s. But what would you like to see in the Game of Thrones spinoffs?
